ADDRESS DELIVERED BY THE LASCOFED PRESIDENT, MR. ORIYOMI AYEOLA AT THE 2017 COOPERATIVE LEADERS RETREAT HELD BETWEEN 28TH SEPTEMBER – 1ST OCTOBER, 2017, AT OWU CROWN HOTEL, IBADAN.
It is with great pleasure that I join the President of Lagos Mainland Multipurpose Cooperative Union, to welcome you to the 2017 Cooperative Leaders’ Retreat.
I appreciate the effort of the present leadership of the MCU to revive cooperative activities within the MCU because some years ago, the activities of Lagos Mainland Multipurpose Cooperative Union were at the lowest level imaginable. As an MCU blessed with responsible and efficient cooperative societies, I have no doubt that in the near future, the Union would have regained its activeness among the comity of MCUs in Lagos State Cooperative Movement.
Dear cooperative leaders, on behalf of the Board of LASCOFED, I want to appreciate you and members of your cooperatives for the support given to me and LASCOFED during my first term as President of your apex, LAGOS STATE COOPERATIVE FEDERATION. The amazing successes recorded would have been impossible without you. I am sincerely grateful to you all. With your support once more, I am positive that we will record more noteworthy achievements which would forever be mentioned in the history of Lagos State Cooperative Movement.
At LASCOFED, we strongly believe in cooperation among cooperatives, this resulted in the decision of the Board of LASCOFED that Multipurpose Cooperative Unions should collaborate to establish businesses and organize training programmes of this nature.
It was expected that the implementation of such directive would promote cooperation among cooperatives, make less-privileged MCUs functional and improve the financial status of the collaborative MCUs. On behalf of the Board of LASCOFED, I want to implore the leadership of Lagos Mainland Multipurpose Cooperative Union to adequately comply with this directive in subsequent retreats otherwise, your Union may be sanctioned.
This year, the Board of LASCOFED recognized that successful businesses are established by visionary people backed with managerial skills, strategic planning and determination to make impact on their societies and organization. Therefore, it adopted “Building and Developing Productive People” as theme for all training programmes to be organized by LASCOFED and its member-affiliates this year 2017. It is further expected that affiliate members should conceptualize their training topics from the given theme.
I appreciate the leadership of this Union for embracing the theme in enhancing the effort of the Lagos State Cooperative Movement to have skilled cooperators who would be productive for themselves and their cooperative societies thereby improving the economic output of Lagos State and Nigeria.
Dear cooperators, as a federation, we are passionate about continuously adding value to the lives of cooperators in Lagos State. This year, we have come up with a pet project which will promote better communication within the Lagos State Cooperative Movement. The project is termed LASCOFED CONNECT. LASCOFED CONNECT is a collaboration between LASCOFED and GLOBACOM for a closed-user-group (CUG) plan which has voice, SMS and data facilities for N1,000 monthly rental. I implore you to embrace this communication scheme for us to have a more unified Cooperative Movement.
Let me also remind us that LASCOFED INSURANCE SCHEME which was launched at the 2016 LASCOFED Cooperative Leaders’ Conference is now in full operation. Please accord the committee on insurance the maximum audience and cooperation whenever they visit your society.
In conclusion, we should remember that the lectures, lessons, skills and knowledge acquired in the course of this retreat should not end here, but rather evoke action as the Cooperative Movement of Lagos State is awaiting our numerous contributions to better the fortunes of the State and Nigeria at large.
Thank you for listening and God bless.
