ADDRESS DELIVERED BY LASCOFED PRESIDENT AT THE JOINT RETREAT ORGANIZED BY IKEJA AND LAGOS ISLAND MULTIPURPOSE COOPERATIVE UNIONS HELD BETWEEN 17TH & 20TH AUGUST, 2017 AT PARK INN BY RADISSON, KUTO ABEOKUTA.
It is with a grateful heart to the Almighty God that I join the Presidents of Ikeja and Lagos Island Multipurpose Cooperative Unions (MCUs) to welcome my dear esteemed cooperative leaders to this joint retreat.
I use the opportunity to congratulate the 2 MCU Presidents and their executive for the program. In the wisdom of the founding fathers of cooperation and polished by the International Cooperative Alliance, some principles were put in place as bedrock for the cooperative movement.
I want to talk about 2 of these principles namely:
5th Principle – Education, Training and Information and
6th Principle – Cooperation amongst Cooperatives.
Education begets inventions and technological advancements the world over. Therefore it is almost as important as the breath as without appropriate and adequate knowledge, the world would have been static. Therefore embarking on training of cooperators as postulated by the fathers of cooperation is commendable. Also commendable is the fact that the MCUs have yielded the yearnings of the Board of LASCOFED that there should be cooperation amongst cooperatives however the alliance would have been better if each of the cooperating units at this retreat positioned themselves as Team leaders with team members drawn from the less fortunate MCUs. By this, there would be better interaction.
It is gratifying to note that Lagos Island and Ikeja MCU rank amongst the best MCUs and parade a great number of enlightened dedicated and committed leaders who not only lead their respective cooperative societies but also hold important positions in their primary posts either as employees or community leaders.
As honourable and important as the positions we hold today are, they are also transient, thus the decision of the LASCOFED Board to select “Building and Developing Productive People” as the theme for this year’s programs. Our aim is to build people who would impact the Nigerian economy productively.
I extend my appreciation to the Resource persons who have signified their interest to share with cooperators here present from their wealth of experience and reservoir of knowledge.
Distinguished cooperative leaders and invited guests, I wish you a most rewarding conference and a memorable and exciting time in Abeokuta, the city under the rock.
Thank you for listening.
