ADDRESS BY THE LASCOFED PRESIDENT, MR. ORIYOMI AYEOLA, AT THE 2017 JOINT COOPERATIVE LEADERS RETREAT ORGANIZED BY ETI-OSA AND IBEJU-LEKKI/AJAH MULTIPURPOSE COOPERATIVE UNIONS HELD AT FREEDOM PALACE HOTEL, PORT-NOVO, BENIN REPUBLIC BETWEEN 5TH – 8TH OCTOBER, 2017.
I am thankful and grateful to Almighty God for the privilege to join you at this Joint Retreat holding today. I join the Presidents of Eti-Osa and Ibeju-Lekki/Ajah Multipurpose Cooperative U to welcome you to this Cooperative Leaders’ Retreat.
Dear cooperative leaders, on behalf of the Board of LASCOFED, I wish to appreciate you and your cooperatives for the support given to me and LASCOFED during my first term as President of your apex, LAGOS STATE COOPERATIVE FEDERATION. The remarkable successes recorded would not have been possible without you, I am grateful to you all. With your support once more, I am optimistic that we will record more noteworthy achievements which would forever be mentioned in the annals of Lagos State Cooperative Movement.
The Board of LASCOFED decided that cooperation among cooperatives should be encouraged at all levels. She advised Multipurpose Cooperative Unions (MCUs) to collaborate in organizing businesses and training programmes of this nature as this would promote unity and enhance synergy of all MCUs in achieving a common objective of the Cooperative Movement of Lagos State. I therefore wish to appreciate the leadership of Eti-Osa and Ibeju-Lekki/Ajah Multipurpose Cooperative Unions for this collaboration. I urge you to make use of the opportunity to better the welfare of your members. However, please note that subsequent retreats should be held before the last quarter of the year.
The theme for this year is “Building and Developing Productive People” as directed by the Board of LASCOFED. This was selected having recognized that the productivity of individuals and organization is fundamental to salvaging the economic downturn witnessed in our nation. It is however regrettable that many people are deficient of the required skills for productivity. It is therefore hoped that this training would equip cooperators with necessary skills to better their lot and improve the fortunes of the various cooperative societies.
I wish to appreciate the leadership of this Union for adopting the theme in enhancing the effort of the Lagos State Cooperative Movement to have skilled cooperators who would be productive for themselves and their cooperative societies thereby improving the economic output of Lagos State and Nigeria.
Dear cooperators, as a federation, we are passionate about continuously adding value to the lives of cooperators in Lagos State. This year, we have come up with a pet project which will promote better communication within our Cooperative Movement. The project is named LASCOFED CONNECT. LASCOFED CONNECT is a collaboration between LASCOFED and GLOBACOM for a closed-user-group (CUG) plan which has voice, SMS and data facilities for N1,000 monthly rental. I implore you to embrace this communication scheme for us to have a more unified Cooperative Movement and a robust interaction platform.
I also want to reiterate that the LASCOFED INSURANCE SCHEME which was launched at the 2016 LASCOFED Cooperative Leaders’ Conference is now in full operation. You kindly accord the committee on insurance maximum cooperation whenever they visit your society.
Dear cooperative leaders, in conclusion, we should remember that the lectures, lessons, skills and knowledge acquired in the course of this retreat should not end here, but rather evoke action as the Cooperative Movement of Lagos State is awaiting our numerous contributions to better the fortunes of the State.
I wish to end this address with this quote by Shia LaBeouf “There’s a tendency to mistake preparation for productivity. You can prepare all you want, but if you never roll the dice you’ll never be successful.”
Thank you for listening and God bless.
